Office in Muskegon used to help employers screen crowds of applicants for just a few jobs, but improved economic conditions are changing that. "Over the last year, really, we've seen this big switch. We said we have got to switch what our operations are," said Brittany Lenertz, spokeswoman for Michigan Works! Muskegon-Oceana. "Employers across the board are not getting as many applications." That's why Michigan Works! Muskegon-Oceana starting on Tuesday, March 24 is inviting job seekers to events where they can learn more about the companies who are doing the hiring. The first Meet the Employer session will take place with Challenge Manufacturing at 1:30 Tuesday, March 24 in the Terrace Plaza building, 316 Morris Ave. The event is free, but registration is required. If people like what they hear, they can apply for the jobs right at the Michigan Works! Office. Michigan Works! Staff will be available to help with applications. "Many people don't know who is hiring or assume they know what a company does or how they do it," Sonya Barrett, Business Services Manager for Michigan Works! Muskegon-Oceana. "That's not always the case. These companies have a lot of great opportunities to offer, and we want to make sure the public knows about that." Future employers include Mercy Health, Scherdel Sales & Technology, DaySpring Services, Alcoa Howmet, Structural Concepts, ADAC Automotive, Port City Group, and Hilite International. To register for the Meet the Employer event, call 231.724.8891. Job of the week The Port City Group in Muskegon has posted a job opening for an Industrial Robot Programmer. The "ideal candidate must have five years minimum experience with programming of robots in an industrial production environment," according to the advertisement. The ideal candidate must also have experience troubleshooting the program and the robots electronically and mechanically. Search more job openings in Muskegon and across the state here. In other news, the local unemployment rate still looks healthy Muskegon County unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in January, according to state analysts in the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. That number - not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations - slightly from last month but up 2.4 percentage points compared to one year ago, January 2014, when the unemployment rate was 8.9 percent. That's a bigger jump than the state average took and more than in Grand Rapids did during the same period of time. The Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses Muskegon County, has seen job levels rise by 1,800 or 3 percent, with the majority of that increase reported in the service providing sector. The state keeps record of jobs data for the Muskegon-Norton Shores statistical area, which encompasses Muskegon County. Local jobless rates come from surveys of households conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and don't reflect the percentage of people applying for jobless benefits. Jobs numbers come from a separate census survey of businesses in the area. Stephen Kloosterman covers local government, employment and the outdoors for MLive Muskegon Chronicle.
